Initially opening in Germany last winter, Vertical will release “Girl You Know It’s True” in select US theaters on August 9th.
Milli Vanilli, consisting of German Rob Pilatus (Tijan Njie) & French Fab Morvan (Elan Ben Ali), became a music phenomenon in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Their hits included “Girl You Know It’s True,” “Girl I’m Gonna Miss You,” & “Baby Don’t Forget My Number.” Milli Vanilli stormed the charts around the world. Fab and Rob seemed to have a great career ahead of them – until it finally came out that they didn’t sing any of their songs themselves.
The truth emerged at the height of their fame, leading to one of the biggest scandals in music history and the loss of their Grammy Award. The buyers of their albums were awarded compensation.
The situation behind the scenes escalated, and the pressure on Rob and Fab grew.
Orchestrated by music producer Frank Farian (Matthias Schweighofer), they became global stars with three #1 hits in the U.S. But only a small circle of insiders know that the duo was not actually singing but rather lip-syncing to the voices of two other artists.
What followed was one of the biggest crashes in music history.
The film was shot in Munich, Berlin, Cape Town, and Los Angeles. It features a cast that includes Graham Rogers and Bella Dayne.
Starring Tijan Njie as Rob & Elan Ben Ali as Fab, plus Matthias Schweighöfer as producer Frank Farian.
Milli Vanilli was a pop/dance music project formed by Frank Farian in Germany in 1988, fronted by Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus. The group’s debut album achieved international success and earned them a Grammy Award for Best New Artist Feb. 21, 1990. Milli Vanilli became one of the most popular pop acts in the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, their success turned to infamy when their Grammy was revoked after it was revealed that the lead vocals on the record were not the actual voices of Morvan and Pilatus.
The material intended for Milli Vanilli’s second album was released under the names of the actual singers, dubbed “The Real Milli Vanilli”. Although Morvan and Pilatus later released an album using their actual voices, it was a commercial failure. On the eve of a potential comeback tour in 1998, ten years after Milli Vanilli’s initial debut, Rob Pilatus was found dead in a Frankfurt hotel of an apparent drug overdose. Fab Morvan went on to pursue a solo career with mixed results.
