
STARZ has announced that “Magic City: An American Fantasy,” an immersive five-part docuseries that brings viewers inside the famed Atlanta club and features an oral history from the A-listers who made it legendary, will premiere Friday, August 15th.
STARZ also unveiled the teaser , offering a glimpse at the club’s founder, Michael “Mr. Magic” Barney, as well as executive producers and hip-hop legends Jermaine Dupri and Drake, while also highlighting the alluring and feminine power of Magic City’s dancers.
New episodes of “Magic City: An American Fantasy” will be available to stream weekly on Fridays on the STARZ app and all STARZ streaming and on-demand platforms.
“Magic City: An American Fantasy” is a riveting docuseries that takes viewers on a wild and unexpected ride detailing the legendary club’s storied history as a cultural hub in Atlanta.
Having evolved into the definitive king-maker in the hip-hop community, the club caters to high-profile celebrities such as 2 Chainz, Nelly, Shaquille O’Neal, Quavo, Killer Mike and Big Boi, all of whom share their firsthand Magic City experiences in exclusive interviews. Additionally, the docuseries offers a powerful platform for the lives of the many women who work there and are responsible for building the club’s mystique.
Magic City has held a special place in Black culture for nearly 40 years. It was the well-known hangout of notorious drug gang B.M.F. and the site of a widely viewed get-out-the-vote announcement by former Georgia Governor Stacey Abrams in 2020.
Many of today’s hip-hop superstars even credit the DJs at Magic City for their success. Although the club continues to serve as a meeting place where the worlds of politics, music and sports coverage, the true story of its rise to fame has long remained a mystery – until now.
On linear, new episodes of “Magic City: An American Fantasy” will debut on August 15th at 10:00 pm ET/PT on STARZ in the US and 11:00 pm ET/PT in Canada immediately following the season finale of “BMF.”
The documentary series initially premiered to acclaim in 2024 at the SXSW festival. The series is created and executive-produced by Cole Brown. Drake’s DreamCrew Entertainment, Jermaine Dupri, and Jami Gertz serve as executive producers. The series is directed by Charles Todd and produced by Scheme Engine – a BIPOC-owned studio with a strong focus on women and minority representation – with showrunner and executive producer Bayan Joonam, executive producers Devin Amar and Alex Kaplan, and producers Ashley Brooke and Marlowe Blue.
