UB spoke to Shalita Grant (Janae), Bria Henderson (Cherry), and William Stanford Davis (Earl) about the “Side Quest” episode “Pull List.”
UrbanBridgez.com: Give us a brief description about your characters in the episode?
Shalita: Janae is the owner of this amazing comic book shop. She loves her community and she’s a nerd deep down. And she goes hard for her people and for her business.Bria: Cherry is a comic book nerd to the fullest. Confident loud and protective pretty much.
William: Earl is an OG nerd, you know he feels like this is his shop. You know that he has Shalita’s back in terms of what’s going on he keeps his eye on everything. But his daily adrenaline rush is dealing with this youngster that comes in and tries to take him down but today he’s not going.
UrbanBridgez.com: Janae don’t take no mess either, what was the best part for you about portraying that role?
Shalita: You know just really having an opportunity to to be in a really niche Black space. Like I think that the “Pull List” episode is a really special treat. A special experience into a very Black experience, it’s heavily Black but it’s so deep down nerdy (laughs). I mean I learned so much during the episode and like what we do for real, which is like you know the animated characters and the children’s characters. There is a feeling that we have of who is who, and we don’t have a problem letting you know who it is.UrbanBridgez.com: And then Bria, I have to say my favorite line probably has to be, “last time you had a job, Kris Kross missed the bus.” (All laugh) So I have to ask you, you guys work with an amazing cast, what was the best part for you working with this ensemble?
Bria: I mean, I feel like I’ve seen everyone in other projects. So like, it was like, oh my goodness that’s so awesome from this show. So it was great working with people and actors that I do love and I’m a fan of their work. And then us all coming together to make this episode. It was like quick, it was a quick connected thing. It had to happen fast, but everyone was like ready to go and play. That created the safe space that, this comic book shop created for the characters. I think we created that for each other, that we just could like make the big choices, go there, just jump in and just have fun. So it didn’t feel like work. Playing Cherry did not feel like work. It just felt like a really good time. And I was like, I’m getting paid. This is a blessing. You don’t see that, all the time. It’s rare. And so like, you have to count it as a blessing. It was fun.
UrbanBridgez.com: William, as I said before, Earl is hilarious. The card game scene is one of my favorites. But you have tell everybody why they need to stream “Side Quest” on Apple TV+ starting March 26th?
William: This is going to be the funniest thing on TV. On Apple TV+, I should say. And, you know, it’s just a great show. Great premise. And some amazing actors. And I think everyone who watches it is going to really enjoy every moment of it. Because it was funny, man. We were laughing in between takes or during the takes. You know, like wait, I’m really saying this? Are you sure you want me to say it (laughs)? So we had a lot of fun. And I got to meet all these young actors and whose work I admire, you know. And so that’s why I think people should watch it. And I think they’re going to really enjoy it.Shalita: Shout out to Leonard and Rome. Because they really are that special sauce to the episode. Like, shout out to them.
UrbanBridgez.com No doubt. I hope you guys all work together again on some other project in some type of way. Because you all have a great chemistry. And then before we wrap, anyone want to add anything else?
Bria: Watch “Side Quest” on Apple TV+ March 26th. Get that 7-day free trial. After that, it’s $9.99 a month (all laugh).
