Civil rights attorney, educator and founder of Moms for Liberation, Nekima Levy Armstrong is known for her extensive background and passionate commitment to justice and equity.
She has shared her perspective on social injustice and civil rights in countless interviews including New York Times, BET, FOX, Oprah Daily and Essence by Oprah Winfrey.
Nekima Levy Armstrong can be seen in the new Hulu Documentary, “Sound of the Police”, nn in-depth look at the fraught relationship between black Americans and law enforcement from slavery to the present, spotlighting Amir Locke.
With this being National Book Ban Week (October 1-7), Nekima is passionate about the national crises of Book Bans and empowering moms as a catalyst for change. She recently released “J is for Justice: A Social Justice Book for Kids.”
With the alarming rate of Book Bans, as well as, the removal of America’s History from American History there is no contextual framework for teaching some of the most challenging and critical moments of our nation’s history: slavery, civil rights and segregation or the impact these chapters still have on the lives of African Americans today.
In 2015, Nekima became president of the Minneapolis chapter of the NAACP and a year after the death of Jamar Clark, she announced her intention to run for mayor of Minneapolis in our city’s 2017 election as a member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party.
In 2020, Nekima participated in local protests over the murder of George Floyd. She was present when police officers fired tear gas on protesters without warning.
