The UB Interview: Fredro Starr Talks ‘Behind the Grind’ + Onyx 30th Anniversary
In the new television series “Behind the Grind,” Fredro Starr is taking the reigns as talk show host—brings the viewers beyond the material tropes of success and goes behind the veil with his guests to explore individual roadmaps of accomplished people and what lessons we can learn from their lives.
The series premiered October 29th, the three episode limited inspirational talk series luminary guests was Sticky Fingaz, followed by Peter Gunz and todays finale of season one ends with Benzino at 3pm EST on Impact Network.
Fredro released his latest album this month entitled “Jazz,” stream below!
Born Fred Lee Scruggs, Jr. in New York City — where he embraced his love of poetry, music and hip hop. Fredro Starr formed the group Onyx with Sticky Fingaz, Sauvé and the late Big DS in the early 1990s.
They were discovered by Run DMC’s Jam Master Jay, who would later sign them to his label JMJ Records. Onyx’s debut album was named Soul Train’s 1994 Best Rap Album of the Year and they were nominated as Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop New Artist at the 1994 American Music Awards.
Fredro would go on to appear in more than 55 film and television shows, including Spike Lee’s Clockers, Sunset Park, Moesha, Ride, CSI: Miami, The Wire, Law & Order, Save the Last Dancee and many more.
Fredro Starr spoke with UB’s Tishelle recently, about everything “On The Grind.” Fredro shares why he wanted to do the series and how his relationship with guests sets him apart from the rest.
Fredro also shares new on Onyx 30th Anniversary plans next year and gets candid about the late great Jam Master Jay!
UB couldn’t speak with Fredro Starr without touching on the classic sitcom Moesha, in which he played the character Q for six years on and off. He shares his reluctance at first to do the series and how he found balance and success in the role.
