The new must-watch documentary “Aftershock” explores the important topic of maternal/women‘s health and morbidity, especially among women of color. From directors Paula Eiselt and Tonya Lewis Lee (wife of Spike Lee).
This is a topic that could not be more timely as, in our country today, women’s rights are being threatened and politicized. The film will be screening at ABFF (American Black Film Festival) in Miami this week.
“Aftershock” is from Disney’s Onyx Collective and ABC News, that will premiere July 19th on Hulu.
Aftershock shines a light on the world of gynecology—one that has a long-standing history of exploiting and neglecting Black women in America—while simultaneously uplifting the families, activists, and birth workers who are striving to bring change.
The film was applauded by critics and general audiences across the board, who hailed the film as “emotional,” “chilling” but also “necessary,” “inspiring,” and “a great achievement” in showing that solutions to this crisis do exist.
Civil Rights activist Kimberlé Crenshaw tweeted about the film: “A Black woman having a baby in America is like a Black man in a traffic stop. It’s that lethal. A stunning reality lifted up in the phenomenal documentary, “Aftershock.”
