CBS News and Stations will offer special programming for Juneteenth, the holiday when the US commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.
Coverage will be featured across all broadcasts and platforms, leading up to and on Juneteenth, including a five-hour marathon of “America In Black,” the primetime newsmagazine produced by CBS News and BET, Monday, June 19th on CBS News Streaming.
Additionally, a half-hour CBS Reports, the historic CBS News documentary franchise, explores how a history of broken promises preventing Black farmers from owning land has contributed to the racial wealth gap and inspired new efforts to build and protect generational wealth.
CBS News in UB‘s home of Minnesota will provide extensive coverage on Monday, June 19th of a community event in the Rondo area of St. Paul. Rondo is the historically Black neighborhood that was displaced by the construction of Interstate 94.
The original Rondo neighborhood in St. Paul was destroyed, when I-94 was constructed through the area starting in 1956.
The CBS News Streaming marathon of “America In Black,” the first-of-its-kind monthly primetime newsmagazine, begins at 6:00 PM, ET, also on Monday, June 19th. “America In Black” first premiered in February and features a mix of long-form investigative reports, one-on-one newsmaker interviews, human interest stories and exclusive in-depth celebrity profiles all exploring the Black experience in America.
CBS News’ Jericka Duncan will host the five-hour marathon and sit down with “America In Black” correspondents James Brown, Ed Gordon, Michelle Miller, Skyler Henry and Danya Bacchus to get additional perspective on the stories they reported for the series including topics like reparations, rap lyrics on trial, the CROWN Act, celebrity and influencer interviews and more.

Today, the phrase “40 acres and a mule” represents the broken promises the U.S. government has made with Black American farmers that have contributed to a vast racial wealth gap. CBS REPORTS explores the ways in which Black Americans are trying to reclaim their land, connect to their ancestry and generate wealth that can be passed on for generations to come.
CBS NEWS RADIO – On the “Kaleidoscope” segment for the CBS NEWS WEEKEND ROUNDUP, CBS News Radio’s Allison Keyes speaks with a scholar about the importance of Juneteenth. They discuss not only the celebration of the day, but also what this means at a time when states across the nation are trying to ban Black history. CBS NEWS SUNDAY MORNING – For the broadcast on Sunday, June 18, Mark Whitaker reports on the life and legacy of pioneering Black architect Paul Revere Williams, who designed the homes of celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball and Lon Chaney, as well as major public and private buildings.
To commemorate Juneteenth, CBS MORNINGS and CBS SATURDAY MORNING will highlight individuals making an impact on their communities through their culinary skills.
On Juneteenth, the CBS EVENING NEWS WITH NORAH O’DONNELL will mark the day with coverage highlighting celebrations around the country.
The CBS Local News Innovation Lab will produce several stories for CBS-owned stations across the country. The coverage will include an interview with Samuel Collins, the co-chair of the Juneteenth Legacy Project, who talks about how the holiday came to be. In addition, the Innovation Lab is producing profiles of artist Reginald Charles Adams, the force behind the Absolute Equality Project, and Opal Lee, who is known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth.”
CBS News New York
CBS News New York’s community journalists will produce hyperlocal stories about how Juneteenth is being celebrated in Brooklyn, the Bronx and Harlem. In addition, CBS News New York will shine a light on the “Stonewall Inn Gives Back” initiative.

On Friday, June 16, CBS News Chicago will feature a story about a group of mothers who, after noticing plenty of promotion for St. Patrick’s Day, but nothing recognizing Black history, banded together to create a Juneteenth Family Festival. CBS Chicago is a media sponsor of the event.
CBS News Philadelphia
In the week leading up to Juneteenth, CBS News Philadelphia has several pieces highlighting arts organizations and businesses in the region featured in the 17th Annual Philly Juneteenth Festival in Germantown.
CBS News San Francisco
CBS News San Francisco will deliver multiple reports leading up to the holiday and on the day of Juneteenth will feature several stories ranging from a look at the historic Filmore District, once deemed “Harlem of the West,” a report on former KPIX anchor Dana King’s “Monumental Reckoning” art installation and a live report from the Berkley Juneteenth festival.

CBS News Boston will look at the history of Juneteenth in the city, including coverage of the Juneteenth celebration at Franklin Park.
CBS News Detroit
Amyre Makupson will profile a woman whose ancestors were aboard the last slave ship to land in the United States and the station will cover the Juneteenth and LGBT Pride Parade.
CBS News Sacramento
CBS Sacramento will offer multiple features looking at the Juneteenth holiday and showcase events throughout the week, including a report on the Black Chefs Collaborative, a report on how the Gold Rush brought enslaved people to California and a report from Sacramento Juneteenth, the longest-running Juneteenth festival in the city.
