The UB Video Interview: Kosine Talks ‘BET’s The Encore’ + Production
Producer Kosine was born and raised in Chicago, IL. He had his first major break in the music industry through his work with Da Internz on Mims’ 2009 sophomore album, “Guilt”. Serving as co-executive producer for the project, placing seven songs, the album’s first single, “Move, If You Wanna“, was released in 2008.
He’s a 9x Grammy-Nominated, Multi-Platinum Producer/Songwriter that is behind some of the biggest hits for Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Big Sean, Justin Bieber, Nas and many more. He’s also an On-Air Personality for Apple Music Beats1.
Kosine is both a graduate and former professor of Columbia College Chicago, where he gave a TEDx Talk called “How to Re-Write Your Life” in 2016. Upon graduation in 2006, Marcos was hired at Columbia College as a professor of hip-hop beat making and held this position for two and a half years.
Kosine received ASCAP awards in 2013 for producing, “A$$” by Big Sean and “Birthday Cake” by Rihanna.
In addition to the ASCAP awards, Kosine has had several Grammy nominations for his contributions to classic projects which include “My World 2.0” receiving a Grammy nomination for best pop vocal album in 2011; “Life Is Good”, by Nas , nominated for best rap album; Tamar Braxton‘s “Love And War” for best urban contemporary album; “Love in the Future” by John Legend; and lastly, “Anaconda” by Nicki Minaj, which was nominated for best rap song for the 2015 Grammy awards.
In 2018 Kosine broadened his talents and took on the TV world taking on roles as host of the BET show “ManCave” and earning a premiere role as Lil Dini on FOX’s hot show “Star”. He also launched his series “Kingz with Kosine” on Fox Soul and was been tapped by the Biden/Harris campaign during the 2020 election to help boost their efforts.
Currently Kosine can be seen every Wednesdays night at 10 PM ET/PT on “BET Presents: The Encore.” The series features Shamari DeVoe, Irish Grinstead, LeMisha Grinstead, Nivea Nash, Felisha King, Fallon King, Pamela Long, Aubrey O’ Day and Kiely Williams have signed on to the one-of-a-kind music experiment to become the next big musical sensation.
Kosine is the main producer for the upcoming EP, that will follow the series. Along with choreographer Aliya Janell, songwriter Elijah Blake, and vocal coach Cynnamyn.
UB‘s Tishelle talked to Kosine about the series and the drama & music that has came so far. Kosine shares his thoughts on the twins and why he feels the show is the best one on television.
Kosine also gets candid about production and gives us all a lesson on how it all comes together, from the song to the release. If that’s not enough, he also shares his thoughts on growing up in Chicago and much more!
