The Time Returns as The Original 7ven: New Single on iTunes Today; New Album Next Month
Morris Day, Jesse Johnson, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Garry “Jellybean” Johnson, Jerome Benton and Monte Moir revitalize the sound of Minneapolis Funk! In their first new album together in 21 years, CONDENSATE features 14 brand new but instantly familiar Minneapolis funk songs by the band formerly known as The Time & now The Original 7ven. From their origins in the ‘80s as Prince‘s first pet project led by the cocky protégé Day, this playful, brash group delivered groundbreaking funk-rock dance grooves.
Now, for the first time since the ‘90s, the original members of The Time have reunited as The Original 7ven to deliver an inventive and unapologetically funky album! CONDENSATE has all the old magic and swagger of earlier years and asserts funk-tastic confidence perfectly suited for today’s audience. Endlessly entertaining, this new collection of 14 grooves puts the “fun” back in funk!
The album name CONDENSATE is taken from Morris Day’s tongue-in-cheek comment, “I don’t sweat, I condensate.”
The Original 7ven is a fascinating and outrageous musical congregation! Formed in 1981, Morris Day, Jesse Johnson, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Garry “Jellybean” Johnson, Jerome Benton and Monte Moir were legendary for taking their exciting funk/rock/pop Minneapolis Sound out of the studio and on the road. The Time pulled frenetic energy and warmth from synthesizer-laden technology for their live concerts, led by the marvelously charismatic front man Morris Day. The musical talent behind Day was extraordinary, and every single member of the band went on to build some of the most creative and enduring careers in music that not only defined an era, but reaped success well beyond.
[In Case You Forgot or Didn’t Know]
Lead vocalist Morris Day continues to deliver wildly popular concerts with his version of The Time.
Guitarist Jesse Johnson, who wrote The Time’s “Jungle Love,” also developed a solid career as a producer, working with After 7 and Paula Abdul while also performing on albums by Rod Stewart, Chaka Khan and Motion City Soundtrack.
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis became one of the most innovative and successful production teams in the history of pop music, responsible for an entire era of music including Janet Jackson’s string of hits and the New Jack Swing sound, as well as recent songs by Usher, Mariah Carey and Keyshia Cole. The duo has won Grammy Awards in every decade since their 1986 trophy for Producer of the Year.
Monte Moir has written a string of R&B hits, including Janet Jackson’s “The Pleasure Principle” and much of Alexander O’Neal’s hit debut album (which he also produced).
Drummer Garry “Jellybean” Johnson also produced for Jackson, helping to create her rock-driven “Black Cat, along with working with Jesse on O’Neal’s album and other artists including Mint Condition.
Jerome Benton, who was an audience favorite for his playful interaction and delightful chemistry with Morris Day onstage, starred in Prince’s films (Purple Rain, Under the Cherry Moon), and has written several plays.
