Exclusive: Bobby V ‘UB’ Interview

He’s had #1 singles, platinum and gold albums, has toured the world and has appeared on songs with Lil Wayne and Ludacris, among many others. Five years into a remarkable solo career, Bobby V (formerly Bobby Valentino) has experienced the best the music industry has to offer while working with some of the game’s elite. No wonder he’s calling his fourth album ‘Fly on the Wall.’

Bobby V fills his new album with stories of his remarkable experiences. With production handled by Tim & Bob (Boyz II Men, Michael Jackson), The Pentagon (formerly The Underdogs [Beyonce, Justin Timberlake]), LOS (Usher, the Dream) and Jazze Pha (T.I., Ciara), Fly On The Wall contains the type of polished production accented by live instrumentation that has become Bobby V’s signature.

With a string of hit singles and albums, a burgeoning record label and a charitable foundation inspiring the youth, Bobby V is ready to give his fans another album that thrills them as much as it entertains them.

Recently Bobby V spoke with Aries from UrbanBridgez.com about his new album ‘Fly on The Wall,’ the inspiration behind his new video, staying relevant, recently chatting with Anita Baker, his holiday plans & more!

UrbanBridgez.com: Tell us about the new album ‘Fly On The Wall?’
Bobby V: ‘Fly on The Wall’ is the new album & will be in stores in March or April of 2011. It’s a great album! I call it ‘Fly on The Wall’ because I been a fly on the wall since I got in the game at age 13, in the group MISTA. So I’ve seen the ups and downs, the good and the bad & the ugly. So I’ve been a fly on the wall and I’m giving my fans a chance to be a fly on the wall with this whole process.

UrbanBridgez.com: Real cool, what do you want your fans to take away from this album after they hear it?
Bobby V: I really just want them to love the music, it’s all about the music to me. It’s not about anything else, just strictly the music. So you know that’s what I want them to love and to grasp the music. And I just want them to get a feeling, kinda like I get when I record my records you know.

UrbanBridgez.com: Got you! I’m really feeling alot of the songs I’ve heard like the one with 50 Cent and the new single ‘Words,’ what’s some of your favorite joints on there?
Bobby V: I’m gonna say all of them! And I’m not just saying that to say that all of my stuff is extra hot. You know how some artists put out a new album every six months or every year, just alot. I’m not one of those artist, I take alot of time when I do my albums because I want my albums to be produced. Like every producer I work with they gotta know how to play the guitar, they gotta know how to play the keys, etc. So I record like 50-60 songs for each album. It’s almost like Basketball tryouts you know. The best 14-15 players make the team, so from beginning to end I gotta make sure each song is damn near perfect.

UrbanBridgez.com: That’s what’s up, I hear you recently shot the video for ‘Words’ in ATL, how was that filming in your hometown?
Bobby V: Man it felt good, I was in the A. We shot it right around Thanksgiving so it was cool. The video concept is dope, I did a rendition of the Lionel Richie video ‘Hello.’ Classic, the lead lady in the video is blind, but she’s beautiful and I fall in love with her. It has substance and I’ve been guilty as well as other artists as well of doing videos that have no substance. Just cars, bottles, clothes and the club. I’ve done too many of them videos so from this point on I’m trying to have a little more substance about myself, you know what I’m talking about? [watch the full video below]

UrbanBridgez.com: Definitely! buy soma online overnight cod Because you been in this industry for awhile.
Bobby Valentino: A long time!

UrbanBridgez.com: You’ve come a long way since the MISTA days, how have you managed to stay relevant in this fickle business for so long?
Bobby V: It’s real fickle (laughs). Man how do I mange to stay relevant…I’ve learned that you just gotta do you, you know. That’s my lesson and that’s what I share with everybody else. You gotta do you & find your niche and stick to it & try to perfect it! I’ve been guilty of jumping on the bandwagon of certain sounds and that’s how people mess up and I’ve done it too. I was telling somebody earlier I remember last summer or the summer before the biggest record was ‘Blame it On The Alcohol’ the Jamie Foxx record, so everybody tried to recreate that record. They tried to work with the same producer and writer to do that, you know. But people don’t really appreciate when you try to follow the trend. You gotta find what you do good and keep doing that. So that’s kind of been my lesson and that’s what I’m gonna do with this album is to just stay consistent with my sound.

UrbanBridgez.com: Right! I know you went to the Soul Train Awards this year, how was it basically being in the building with all those legends?
Bobby V: Oh it was cool, and you know what the Soul Train Awards was good I didn’t expect them to be that good. It was better than the BET Awards to me! Erykah Badu was there, she don’t come out for everything so it was good to see her. Ronald Isley and Anita Baker, who are like my two favorite singers of all time. I mean I love Anita Baker and I got the chance to talk to her for like 20 minutes we chopped it up. It was just really alot of power players there and I appreciated that.

UrbanBridgez.com: We’re actually celebrating 5 years this year with our website. Where do you see yourself and career 5 years from now?
Bobby V: Hopefully I’m still doing it and hopefully I’m still relevant and with my label Blu Kolla hopefully I have some artists on my label. My label is very meaningful to me, it’s a movement I’ve had for a long time. But now it’s getting the recognition and becoming a brand and a household name. So hopefully Blu Kolla will really be up and running!

UrbanBridgez.com: Any plans in your near future outside of music?
Bobby V: Yeah I’m gonna do a little acting, I got a foundation, the Bobby V foundation. I wanna dive into that a little bit more. And just touring and stuff, that’s what I love to do is tour. Definitely gonna spread my wings more. I definitely wanna get into the clothing, I’m into fashion. You heard about the Bobby V-Necks?

UrbanBridgez.com: Oh yeah, we talked about that before.
Bobby V: Yeah, we gotta get the Bobby V-Necks poppin!

UrbanBridgez.com: Any Holiday plans?
Bobby V: Yeah, family & shows. That’s it, I’ll be kickin it with the fam and I got alot of shows coming up. I’ll be in the studio, I’m finishing up on my mixtape now. I’m on my Christmas grind (laughs)

UrbanBridgez.com: (laughs)That’s what’s up, any last words for your fans?
Bobby V: I love all my fans, follow me on Twitter (@bobbyv), my website bobbyvmusic.com – Your boy Bobby V, I’m still here man and I appreciate all the love & support and I’m asking everybody to support this album ‘Fly on The Wall’ and my new single ‘Words.’ I’m putting the positive energy in the air now that this is gonna be one of my biggest records because with this record ‘Words’ I haven’t felt this way about a record in a long time. Even when I hear it now, it just hits my soul it’s just a soulful record and I haven’t put out a soulful record in a minute. I think this record is going to be a smash!
