The Voice; Michel’le Is Back

It’s been nearly twenty-one long years since the release of her classic multi-platinum self-titled Ruthless Records‘ debut, and despite the fact that her solid, yet commercially panned sophomore collection, Hung Jury, arrived in the summer of ’98 with little to no fanfare, Michel’le, nee’ Toussant, is, and always has been, a definite musical force to be reckoned with.

Having originally gotten her start providing backing vocals for the West Coast based World Class Wreckin’ Cru’s smash bedroom anthem, “Turn Off the Lights,” Michel’le, with her unique child-like speaking/big & beautiful singing voice, soon found herself fielding offers for a recording contract of her very own. The late Eric “Eazy-E” Wright quickly stepped in, and immediately signed the budding songstress to a lucrative contract with his, then still fledgling, Ruthless empire.

Michel’le, her more-than-impressive 11 track solo outing, bowed on October 23rd 1989. Fueled by a string of hit singles; “No More Lies,” “Nicety,” “Keep Watchin’,” “Something In My Heart” and “If,” the acclaimed set eventually went on to garner sales of more than two million units. Michel’le also reached the #2 and #7 spot(s), respectively, on Billboard Magazine’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Hot 100 chart(s).

Plagued by numerous release date push-backs and delays, in addition to major inner turmoil within her, then, imprint, the infamous Death Row Records, Michel’le’s lackluster second LP, Hung Jury, almost ten years removed from that of her premiere offering, unfortunately, was too little too late. And with that, Michel’le simply walked away from the limelight.

Fast forward to 2010, and to the vast delight of her millions of fans around the world, Michel’le has returned and, thankfully, is back to making beautiful music again.
