#TBT Single Spotlight: ‘Come Over’ by 4 By Four
The Smooth Ballad Is Considered A Classic Within 80’s R&B.
In the summer of 1987, a new R&B group debuted by the name of 4 By Four.
From New York, the members consisted of brothers Damen & Lance Hayward (from the Bronx), Jeraude Jackson (also from the Bronx) and Steve Gray (from Queens).
They released their self-titled debut album which peaked at #141 on the Billboard 200 and #28 on Billboard’s R&B Albums chart.
The first single from the album “Want You For My Girlfriend” peaked at #79 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #8 on Billboard’s R&B Singles chart, staying on the chart for 15 weeks.
The albums next single, was written and produced by Melvin Riley, Jr. of Ready For The World. And it was written for New Edition.
After their label MCA turned down the record, he gave “Come Over” to 4 By Four.
“Come Over” peaked at #10 on Billboard’s R&B chart, staying on the chart for 14 weeks. The smooth ballad is considered a classic within 80’s R&B.
These days, Damen Hayward continues to to work in the music business as a songwriter, producer and vocal coach.
He’s also a former member of the current line-up of the 80s group Force MD’s. In 2016, he released a gospel release.
