“Sing Sing,” starring Colman Domingo and directed by Greg Kwedar hit select theaters on July 12th and will be nationwide on August 2nd.
Divine G (Colman Domingo), imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose by acting in a theatre group with other incarcerated men.
When a wary outsider joins the group, the men decide to stage their first original comedy, in this stirring true story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art, starring an unforgettable ensemble cast of formerly incarcerated actors.
Also starring Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin, Sean San Jose, Paul Raci, David “Dap” Giraudy, Patrick “Preme” Griffin, Mosi Eagle, James “Big E” Williams, Sean “Dino” Johnson, Cornell “Nate” Alston, Camillo “Carmine” LoVacco, Dario Peña and Pedro Cotto.
Over 80% of people held in American jails have not been convicted of a crime. Given the systemic racism and classism embedded in the U.S. criminal justice system, language about incarceration places an undue burden on people of color and poor people.
The filmmakers were determined to cast as much of this film with the people who really lived it. It wasn’t just a philosophical choice, it was a recognition of the immense talent and pathos of the alumni from RTA.
“With Sing Sing, we knew we wanted a few professionals in this, but the majority of the ensemble needed to be actual alumni of the program. And we had confidence in that, because we knew the talent was there,” stated Clint Bentley.
Though the men didn’t have film and TV experience, they had decades of experience onstage, at “Sing Sing” and elsewhere, some who had been out for 10 years, others only a few months.
