The popularity of “The Lion King” has spanned generations and now audiences will be able to see the origin story of the king himself.

Mufasa: The Lion King,” opens in theaters nationwide December 20th.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker, Barry Jenkins, “Mufasa: The Lion King” will explore the story of how Mufasa became one of the greatest kings of the Pride Lands.

The prequel continues the tradition of the original 1994 movie and follows the cinematic style of 2019’s “The Lion King,” which made $1.6 billion at the global box office. The innovative approach blends live-action filmmaking techniques with photoreal computer-generated imagery.

Reprising their roles from the 2019 live action “Lion King” remake are John Kani as Rafiki, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, Donald Glover as Simba and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala.

Also joining the cast is Beyoncé‘s daughter Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara, the daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala.

The remainder of the cast includes; Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Taka, a lion prince with a bright future who accepts Mufasa into his family as a brother; Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki, Preston Nyman as Zazu, Thandiwe Newton as Taka’s mother, Eshe, Lennie James as Taka’s father, Obasi, Anika Noni Rose as Mufasa’s mother, Afia, Keith David as Mufasa’s father, Masego, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, and Donald Glover as Simba.
