The “Summer Block Party” tour promises to be a nostalgic journey back to the golden era of R&B, giving fans the opportunity to relive some of the most memorable moments in the genre’s history.
With a combination of soul-stirring ballads, infectious dance tracks, and stunning harmonies, this tour is set to be the must-see event of the summer!
That car raced out of the gates in the early ‘90s. Jodeci’s debut album, Forever My Lady (1991), shifted the R&B landscape with its mix of gospel-tinged vocals over bouncy synth-production. Boasting three breakout singles, in “Stay,” “Come and Talk to Me” and the title track, Jodeci established themselves as the leading soul voices of the decade.
Their sophomore effort, Diary of a Mad Band (1993), saw the band evolve; DeVante’s songwriting (“My Heart Belongs To U,” “What About Us”) was richer and the depths of emotion evoked by K-Ci and JoJo’s vocals (“Cry For You,” “Alone”) were deeper.
Entertainment Weekly labeled the set transcendent and Vibe said the album captured the “hearts (and panties) of a nation of young ladies.” Their follow-up, 1995’s The Show, the Afterparty, the Hotel was a fitting wrap to their trilogy, with sexy anthems like “Freek’n You” and wedding-powering ballads such as “Love U 4 Life.”
Multiplatinum R&B trio SWV (Sisters With Voices), featuring Cheryl “Coko” Gamble, Tamara “Taj” George and Leanne “Lelee” Lyons, has sold more than 30 million records worldwide and been nominated for three Grammy Awards.
SWV‘s debut album scored a string of top ten R&B hits. To be clear, every single released from the album hit the Top 10. “I’m So Into You”, “Right Here”, “Downtown”, “You’re Always on my Mind” and the classic “Weak.” “Weak” sold 50,000 singles in one day. This established the trio as a commercial force in early 1993. Teddy Riley helped the group craft their sound further with “Right Here/Human Nature, the remix to their hit “Right Here.”” The remix features samples of Michael Jackson’s hit, “Human Nature.” The remix also went #1 on the R&B charts, for seven weeks to be exact and went #2 on the Pop charts.
“It’s About Time” would go on to sell more than 5 million records worldwide, and would become the #2 best selling album of 1993.
Lifetime has confirmed an SWV biopic in the works and SWV just completed a reality show with Xscape.
Four childhood friends from Baltimore – Sisqo, Nokio, Jazz, and Woody took the music industry by storm in the ’90s with a combination of old school vocal harmonies and effortless charisma. And when their debut album produced four top charting singles – “Tell Me”, “In My Bed”, “Never Make a Promise”, and “Five steps.”
Dru Hill positioned themselves as a group destined for major success. And they got an extra boost with the remarkable popularity of Sisqo‘s solo records. But despite a bounty of top ten hits, the group was bedeviled by clashes with their record label, one of which culminated in a public brawl, and internal problems within the group, including drug abuse and weight issues, which ultimately resulted in the departure of two members. For all that, Dru Hill keeps on keeping on, and remains one of the most beloved singing groups performing today.
