The film is guided by David Bowie’s own narration and is the first officially sanctioned film on David Bowie.
In 2018, Brett Morgen was granted unprecedented access to David’s archives which encompasses a lifetime of materials, including an extensive catalog of unseen footage and personal collection of his own art and poetry. Brett spent four years assembling the film and another 18 months designing the soundscape, animations, and color palette.
For the film, the sound team, featuring David Bowie’s long-time collaborator, friend and music producer Tony Visconti and Academy Award-winning sound mixer Paul Massey remixed and translated David’s original stems for a theatrical environment.
Throughout his career, across generations, David Bowie taught us that our differences were our strengths. With “Moonage Daydream,” David Bowie provides us with a roadmap of how to survive the 21st century, inviting audiences to celebrate his legacy and enduring influence like never before.
David Bowie famously questioned MTV in 1983, on “why there wasn’t many blacks on the network?” David stated; “Having watched MTV over the past few months, it’s a solid enterprise with a lot going for it. I’m just floored that by the fact that there’s so few black artists featured on it. Why is that?”
When the interviewer tried to reason that the station had to “play the music that we think the entire country is going to like” and questioned what artists like The Isley Brothers meant to 17-year-olds. David Bowie responded; “I tell what an artist like The Isley Brothers or Marvin Gaye means to a Black 17-year-old, And surely he’s part of America?”
