New Edition was one of the most successful and influential acts of the ’80s & ’90s, who set the standard for young male R&B/Pop groups.
Tonight, along with another successful and influential group, New Kids on The Block, they will all grace the stage together Live at the “2021 American Music Awards” (AMAs).
Live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles at 8:00 p.m. EST/PST on ABC.
All six members will be present; Ralph Tresvant, Ricky Bell, Ronnie DeVoe, Michael Bivins, Johnny Gill and Bobby Brown.
The AMAs “Battle of Boston” will see the two iconic boy bands from Beantown, New Edition and New Kids on the Block, sharing the stage for the very first time for a can’t-miss performance.
Two-time AMA winners New Edition will make a much-anticipated return having last performed at the AMAs in 1997, while this will mark the return of two-time AMA winners New Kids on the Block, who last performed on the show in 2010.
Bobby Brown and Johnny Gill talked to “Shadow And Act” about tonight‘s performance; “Our biggest challenge is making sure that we deliver what our fans are expecting from us.” Johhny went on to say; “And that’s what he’s been here since the beginning of time to do for us to make sure that we got the right songs, the right stuff in there and everything transitions and everything working to perfection.”
What keeps NE coming back and staying together? “Lots of prayer and, you know, just having a mentality that the brotherhood is forever and we don’t dwell on little things. We try to keep it, you know, brotherly love. And it works for us,” Bobby stated.
Johnny Gill said of tonight‘s performance with NKOTB;
“New Kids are great friends of ours and come from Boston as well. And I just think that it was first and first and foremost, it was long overdue. Being able to collaborate and come together, and I think second, it’s just that at this point in time when we look at where the music is and where the industry is, I think that we’ve now become the staple of what you know, what OG’s are. And so we set an example and set the stage for the generation that’s behind us.”
Bobby Brown shared what makes him proud; “We work really hard to entertain our fans, and we work really hard to be the best that we possibly can be in order for our fans to enjoy what we do,” he states. “We perform for our fans. That’s why we’re still around. We have some NE lifers that are just incredible. The NE lifers have stuck with us through thick and thin, and we’re just proud to be able to do this on a regular basis.”
A 3-part biopic, “The New Edition Story” aired on BET in 2016 and garnered over 30 million viewers.
