Shirley Murdock Releases ‘People Get Ready’ | Inspired by George Floyd Social Unrest
One of our favorites, singer/songwriter Shirley Murdock, has re-record the Impressions’ 1965 classic, “People Get Ready.”
Shirley was inspired to record it after seeing the social unrest that broke out after the death of George Floyd. “I was so moved and hurt about how the police murdered that man with no just cause,” Shirley stated.
“I wanted to make a statement that we need to get along and be respectful of each other. That’s when I thought of this song by Curtis Mayfield. I’ve always loved the song, but I thought it was a fitting message for what’s going on now.”
UB Spoke to the legendary Shirly Murdock in 2019, we asked her then, if she would ever consider doing another live album, but of her classic R&B singles and album/Zapp tracks? “I think I would love to do that! I would love to do that in front of a live audience. Recently, I did an unplugged show here in Dayton, OH. It was a Funk Unplugged and I was invited to do the second performance.” Shirley went on to say; “Even though I got funk, we did a Soul Unplugged. People were singing along it was beautiful. So I would love to do a live album of those classics. That is something that I would be very interested in doing. You started something, I think I’m going to have to look into that.”
Shirley is known for the hits, “As We Lay,” “Go on Without You,” “Husband,” “In Your Eyes” and also known for Zapp and Roger Troutman‘s classic “Computer Love.
