Global superstar and Queen of Christmas Mariah Carey will perform at ‘VH1 Divas Holiday: Unsilent Night‘. The highly anticipated holiday event will tape Friday, December 2nd at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn to air Monday, December 5th at 9:00pm ET on VH1.
Additional A-list performers will be announced shortly.
“I’m thrilled VH1 asked me to return to the DIVAS stage this year,” Carey said. “The DIVAS special offers a wonderful opportunity to perform for my fans over the holidays, which is my favorite and most festive time of year.”
It is undeniable that Carey is the quintessential Christmas songstress. Since its 1993 release, her smash hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has become a holiday soundtrack staple: it has sold over 14 million copies globally, boasts the title of 11th best-selling single of all time, and has consistently returned to claim a spot on the holiday season charts for over two decades. This iconic track appeared on her debut Christmas album “Merry Christmas” (1994), along with a slew of other holiday season classics and Carey-crafted originals. The follow-up Christmas album – “Merry Christmas II You” (2010) – debuted at #1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
The 2016 event will be the third time that Carey has graced the DIVAS stage with her magnetic presence and dynamic vocals. After the incredible success of the original installment in 1998, which featured a legendary “Chain of Fools” duet with Aretha Franklin, Carey returned to wow audiences in 2000 with a show-stopping tribute to the legendary Diana Ross.
The DIVAS event is one of many upcoming appearances for Carey: this month, after playing sold-out venues across Europe, her Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour continues on to both Mexico and Hawaii, and during December, for the third consecutive holiday season, Carey will take the stage at the Beacon Theatre in New York for her perennial Christmas performances. Additionally, her global docu-series, “Mariah’s World,” will premiere December 4th on E! in the United States.
A true trailblazer, Carey has earned acclaim in all facets of her career as an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress. As the best-selling female artist of all time, with more than 220 million records sold and eighteen #1 singles – the most for any solo artist in history – Carey is a luminous and enduring talent who has enthralled audiences for a quarter-century. Carey has been recognized with five Grammy Awards, 21 American Music Awards, 14 Billboard Music Awards and BMI’s coveted Icon Award, among myriad others, and was named Billboard’s Artist of the Decade and the World Music Awards’ World’s Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium. Referred to as the “songbird supreme” by the Guinness World Records, she is famed for her five-octave vocal range, power, melismatic style and signature use of the whistle register. She is equally distinguished as a songwriter, penning all but one of her #1 singles, including “Fantasy,” “Always Be My Baby,” “Hero,” “Touch My Body,” “One Sweet Day” and “We Belong Together,” more than any other solo artist. Carey has also gained acclaim as an actress and was awarded the “Breakthrough Performance Award” at the Palm Springs International Film Festival for her performance in Precious (2009). Beyond industry honors, her popularity is evident across social media, with 21 million Facebook fans and 16 million Twitter followers. Mariah Carey is on Epic Records, a division of Sony Music Entertainment.
After unveiling Mariah Carey as the first performer of VH1‘s forthcoming Divas Holiday special Unsilent Night, another icon has been added to the bill: Patti LaBelle.
The legendary singer — and sweet potato pie entrepreneur — will be serving up sweet melodies, like she did on her holiday-themed albums, 1990‘s This Christmas and 2007‘s Miss Patti‘s Christmas. LaBelle is also a Divas alum, having performed at the 2004 benefit concert for VH1 Save the Music Foundation in Las Vegas alongside Jessica Simpson, Joss Stone, Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry and Gladys Knight.
“I’m so thrilled to share the VH1 Divas stage with Mariah, who is not only an incredible performer, but also my goddaughter,” LaBelle said in a statement.
The VH1 Divas franchise is returning after a four-year hiatus, and Unsilent Night will air Monday, Dec. 5, at 9 p.m. ET on VH1.
OMG CANT WAIT FOR THIS!!!!
