UB Spotlight: Sevyn Streeter; Not Just Another New Artist

If you’re a regular to the R&B scene, we’re sure you have heard of songstress Amber Streeter also known as Sevyn. Streeter has been a fixture in R&B for more than a decade. Many of us were introduced to her when she was signed to Chris Stokes (B2K, Omarion) T.U.G. imprint during the early 2000’s. Streeter was affiliated with the group TG4 (Tom Girls 4 Eva) who had the tomboy-ish style similar to the late, great Aaliyah. The group would occasionally open for then popular black boy band B2K to gain a following but never caught the interest of the record buying public. Their music eventually fizzled on the charts and their debut was shelved leaving Streeter figuring out which way to go musically.

Social media network MySpace, known for attracting independent and mainstream recording artists, became sort of the second chance Streeter was looking for. Her persistence of being heard captured the attention of Rich Harrison (Amerie, Beyoncé) leading her to be signed to the Jive and Richcraft imprint as Se7en.

Harrison added Streeter in addition to other girls to form an underground group called RichGirl in 2007. RichGirl would be on the right track with street-savvy tunes such as “24’s”, “He Ain’t Wit Me Now (Tho)”, and “Swagger Right” which some listeners instantly compared the group to Destiny’s Child. One would think the group would be on the right path of finally having success. RichGirl had everything — the look, the talent and the drive but once again, the politics of the music business and record buying public caused another yet disbandment.

It all wasn’t disappointment for Streeter, who eventually formed a friendship with R&B hit-maker Chris Brown leading to exposure to his fan base. Brown featured Streeter on many of his mixtapes and even had her make a guest appearance on his “Fortune” album. Brown saw what others didn’t – the potential Streeter had to become one of the future voices keeping R&B music growing. She was signed to Brown’s CBE imprint in 2012 and immediately started work on her future career.

She’s now highly sought after for her writing skills even penning tunes for Kelly Rowland, Brandy, Fantasia and British soul-singer Estelle to name a few.

The third time has definitely been a charm for Streeter. She’s released “I Like It” and the popular “It Won’t Stop,” which is currently seeing great success on the R&B charts and Top 40 radio.

All eyes are currently on her “Call Me CrazyEP. A short-form album with bold, female anthems that’s already buzzing within the R&B scene. Two fan favorites from the EP are “Sex on the Ceiling” and “B.A.N.S.” Letdowns happen so much within the music industry. It’s all about having the determination and persistence to make your dreams come true.

The momentum going into 2014 couldn’t be better for Streeter with her debut album expected to drop sometime within the year.
