20-year old, Tahjere (Chyna Tahjere Griffin) recently dropped her sophomore release, an EP entitled “The Heiress.” Her previous release was the EP “Femme Fever” released last year. Chyna is the daughter of R&B singer/songwriter and executive Faith Evans and hit-making producer Kiyamma Griffin.
Tahjere is a singer, rapper, songwriter, producer and arranger who recently studied at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU. Faith spoke to UB about Tahjere telling us “she’s definitely got her own thing, her own swag, her own talent. Like she’s my child for sure, but this girl is amazing! She’s way beyond where I was at that age, she’s like a producer, a writer, a engineer, she can do it all.” Like any proud parent she continued on to say “she has her own dopeness and I’m just really proud of her. She’s making her mark and I know that she’s going to be successful. People are going to be like that’s Chyna, that’s Faith’s daughter. Matter of fact, she’s just going to be just Chyna, Faith’s daughter is going to be so far in the background.”
For her new release “The Heiress” Tahjere wrote and produced the majority of the project. Rufus Black (Omarion, Marques Houston) and Latrelle Simmons (Star Trak, Arista) assisted on some production. At age four she began writing songs of her own, teaching herself to play keyboard by age 7 and to arrange beats by age 10. On this release it shows that she isn’t new to this, but true to this! Her gifts she showcases behind the board and in the lab are those of a veteran.
Not just an amazing singer & producer, Tahjere also showcases her tight flow aside younger brothers Christopher Jr. & Joshua, known as Ceejay & Jahad on “The Throne.” Of course most know Ceejay is the son on the late legendary rapper The Notorious BIG & played the younger Biggie in the film “Notorious” and Jahad is the son of industry executive Todd Russaw (Faith Evans, Boyz II Men, 702).
Other highlights on the EP include the incredible mid-tempo “Say My Name,” which also includes Tahjere spitting some flows over her own vocals. “Ain’t Thinkin Bout You” feat. Magoo is a laid back throw back, that puts you in the mind frame of some of the best R&B released in the 90’s. Her vocals take you in & will assure any doubters when it comes to singing, she most definitely inherited her moms pipes! “Island Queen” is another well written, arranged and recorded track that rhythmic radio would eat up. And the track “Phenomenal” is just that…phenomenal!
Don’t sleep on Tahjere, make sure you preview and download “The Heiress” and keep your ears open on what she does next. This is just the beginning!
