In 1993 a new label was formed by super producer Jermaine Dupri, entitled So So Def. Artists like Kris Kross, Xscape, Bow Wow, Jagged Edge and Da Brat released hit after hit for close to two decades. Making it one of the most successful independent imprints of all time.
This year the label and artists will celebrate 20 years of hits at an All-Star Anniversary Concert. The show will take place February 23rd at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA.
The concert will include performances by Da Brat, Bow Wow, Jagged Ede, Xscape, Anthony Hamilton, Lil Jon, Dem Franchize Boyz, Bass All-Stars, Bone Crusher, J-Kwon, Dondria, Young Bloodz, Fresco Kane and the reunion of Kris Kross!
Jermaine Dupri recently spoke to UB about the legacy of the label and the importance of this show now.
On how excited he is about this anniversary JD stated “It’s incredible, one thing I didn’t know is that I would become apart of history. I just made music and wanted everybody to listen to me and to be apart of it as all of this stuff was going on. I mean it’s something that my kids can look to and other people can look up to. A lot of people say to me that I’m like their mentor. I didn’t know this, but I hear people say this, it feels kind of crazy sometimes. But I love it because we got into this to this to do this and now we’ve become apart of the history of music.”
When asked what he wants his legacy to be, JD said “Just great music, with a group of people making great music! With this whole thing, the importance is that I did it at a time where everybody was healthy, still alive and you can see everybody, like I introduced Kris Kross. So to see these artists and that everybody will get an opportunity to see them is the most important part to me – that we leave that stamp. That night, February 23rd, we’re going to leave that stamp. Nothing but good music!”
