UB Black Music Month Spotlight: The ‘Jasmine Guy’ Album


If you mention Jasmine Guy, people will immediately relate her to “A Different Word” or one of the many roles she has played in over the last three decades in TV & Film.

However in 1990 Jasmine, released her self-titled debut album on Warner Bros. The album featured production by D.J. Eddie F. Nevelle, The Untouchables and was mainly put together by Full Force.

The first single “Try Me” was a top 20 hit and the video was in heavy rotation on BET.

“You know her as an actress. Her leading role on the television series “A Different World” and her movie performances in both Eddie Murphy’s “Harlem Nights” and Spike Lee’s “School Daze” have established her as one of entertainment’s brightest young stars.

You know her as a dancer. She’s performed with the internationally acclaimed Alvin Ailey Dance Company.

Now, get to know Jasmine Guy in an altogether different world…Warner Bros. Records takes great –ride in presenting -“Try Me;’ the first single and video from the dynamic debut album JASMINE GUY. We think you’ll agree that there’s no world this remarkable performer can’t conquer.”

Another Like My Lover” the follow-up single would chart even higher, reaching #6 on Billboards R&B singles chart. The video for the track was a performance one featuring Jasmine dancing through-out the clip.

The third single released from the album was the beautiful ballad “Just Want to Hold You” featuring vocals by the late great James Ingram.

The video for that single world premiered after an episode of the highly successful sitcom “A Different Word” in which Jasmine played the character Whitley Gilbert from 1987-1993.

Don’t Want Money” was the last and final single released to radio from the album and Jasmine performed it on The Arsenio Hall show.

Although that album wasn’t a major success, it showed another talent that Jasmine has and includes some other great tracks including; “Johnny Come Lately,” “Everybody Knows My Name” & “I Don’t Have to Justify.”

Jasmine came to Minneapolis to start recording her sophomore album in 1991 with super producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Although songs were recorded for the album, it was never released.

While working on that album, Jasmine joined Sounds of Blackness with Johnny Gill and Karyn White on Arsenio Hall, performing their hit single “Optimistic.” Which is celebrating 30 years, check out that performance below.
