This coming Sunday at 10 PM ET/PT on our sister network VH1, the channel will unveil their famed franchise “Behind The Music: Mary J. Blige” that will outline the Queen of R&B and Hip-Hop’s rise to stardom. Mary details many of her personal struggles
“By the time we moved to Yonkers, to Schlobohm [Projects], it was just, you know, every man for themselves. It was like survive or die” said Mary. “All the women around were being beaten by men, their self esteem was low; these are the women you’re watching every single day. I’ve seen women destroyed, I’ve head their screams thru the walls as a child from being abused by men. And so that really made everything worse. By the time I was a teenager I was crazy.”
Mary also reflects on the unfortunate circumstances when she was molested at a very young age.
“When I was 5 years old I was molested and just, you know. I remember feeling, literally right before it happened, I just could not believe that this person was going to do this to me .…That thing followed me all my life. The shame of thinking my molestation was my fault. It led me to believe I wasn’t worth anything.”
Be sure to tune in this Sunday at 10 PM ET as VH1 presents “Behind The Music: Mary J. Blige.”
