‘Training Day’ Director Faqua to Direct New Tupac Film

Listen to this article

With Tupac Shakur‘s legend firmly cemented in not just hip-hop but music history, it’s unsurprising that a big-time biopic is finally on the way. The film is going to be directed by former music video and ‘Training Day‘ director Antoine Faqua and is slated to begin shooting in September.

For Faqua, the biggest challenge in getting the film into production will be finding a relatively unknown actor that can play Tupac. Similar to the recent ‘Notorious‘ biopic about Pac’s friend-turned-enemy Notorious B.I.G., they are looking to break new talent in the lead role that doesn’t distract from the rapper’s strong personal imagery.

That’s the goal, I want to discover someone new,” Faqua told Digital Spy. “I want to discover a lot of new people, if I can. Obviously I’m going to have to put some people in it that you know, just because actors have different skills. I want to go to the streets and find him anywhere he might be in the world.”

Faqua’s other films include ‘Brooklyn’s Finest‘ and the Bruce Willis feature ‘Tears of the Sun‘. He made his name directing music videos in the ‘90s, including the pretty amazing back-to-back of Coolio’s ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ and Prince’s ‘The Most Beautiful Girl in the World’. – Boombox
