The UB Video Interview: The Cast of ‘Tyler Perry’s Sistas’ Talk Season 2

Tyler Perry’s Sistas” returned with its second season last Wednesday, picking up right where it left off.

The ratings are in and “Sistas” piqued with 3.0 Million Total Viewers P2+ bringing the collective total to 5.3 Million Total Viewers P2+.

This new season, Tyler Perry will take viewers on an exhilarating ride of emotions and gut-busting predicaments that will test the ladies’ long-standing friendship. This band of women, intertwined with their newfound relationships, must navigate this new-age dating scene as they continue to search for love in their 30’s.

UB talked to the cast about the new season, filming during a Pandemic, their characters growth for season 2 and of course, their experience working with Mr. Tyler Perry.

The talented ensemble cast for season two includes KJ Smith, Mignon, Ebony Obsidian, Novi Brown, Chido Nwokocha, DeVale Ellis, Brian Jordan Jr., Kevin Walton, Anthony Dalton, Trinity Whiteside and Crystal Hayslett.

In Part I of our 3-Part Interview with the cast; KJ Smith, Mignon and DeVale Ellis tell us what to expect from their characters this season. While Anthony Dalton and Crystal Haslett, speak on what is was like filming during a Pandemic.

Novi Brown discusses black masculinity and the misconceptions we have in our community. In regards to her love interest on the series Calvin.

The cast talks about the new season, filming during a Pandemic, their characters growth for season 2 and of course, their experience working with Mr. Tyler Perry.

KJ SMITH: One of Hollywood’s rising stars, KJ Smith, is a multifaceted US actor, trailblazing her own pathway while portraying strong female characters.

Earning rave reviews for her breakthrough role in Ava Duvernay and Oprah Winfrey’s innovative drama series Queen Sugar. She has quickly become one to watch. Smith challenges herself role after role; providing spectacular performances as Kori Rucks on Dynasty and Angela on The Fosters. Smith singlehandedly disappeared into the script as a mother in rehab. She was able to mesmerize the audience in every scene.

MIGNON: Originally from Washington DC with Creole heritage and a Georgia upbringing, Mignon is a Southern story teller and actress. With a B.A. in Film studies from Pepperdine University and extensive production experience, Mignon is no stranger to the industry.

Though she is comfortable in front of and behind the camera, acting has always been her first love. Her original short film 42 Seconds, which she wrote, directed, executive produced, and starred in won Best Director at the Women in Film and Television, Atlanta Short Film Showcase.

EBONY OBSIDIAN: n extraordinary talent, Ebony Obsidian is breaking barriers in the entertainment industry one role at a time. While relatively new to the scene, Ebony is quickly making a name for herself by starring in some of the most coveted projects in film and television. With an incredibly successful 2019 under her belt, she has set herself up for an even bigger year and shows no sign of slowing down.

Ebony can also be seen in Hulu’s Wu- Tang: An American Saga which has been renewed for a second season, and the highly anticipated Amazon series Hunters, from Jordan Peele.

As a native New Yorker, and first-generation American of Eritrean and West Indian descent, you could say passion and persistence run in her blood.

NOVI BROWN: Novi is an actor, producer, photographer, model and writer.

While balancing her studies and a growing international modeling career, Brown also developed a passion for photography and has since had her work published by outlets such as Essence Magazine, Scholastic, The Lifetime Movie Network, UP! TV, ID Channel, HBO Shorts, and E! Networks.

DEVALE ELLIS: DeVale is a former NFL player turned actor who has served in guest starring roles on popular hit TV dramas such as The Blacklist & NCIS. He also played his first Supporting Role as Tommy in the award-winning feature film, Full Circle.

In 2019, Devale also landed a recurring role in the Emmy nominated Netflix series, It’s Bruno as Nelson.

ANTHONY DALTON: Anthony was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was raised by his mother, grandparents, and sister.

Upon finishing college, Dalton packed up his bags and hit the road for a new life in Atlanta, Georgia, in order to pursue his acting career. He started with smaller roles in major projects such as Vampire Diaries and Underground, but soon earned a recurring characters on Fox’s Shots Fired, Bounce TV’s Saints & Sinners, and as a Series Regular on Tyler Perry’s The Paynes.

BRIAN JORDAN JR.: Brian is a multi-hyphenate artist from New Orleans, Louisiana. He is a graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University and attended NYU Tisch School of the Arts’ graduate acting school.

In addition to his hilarious role of Maurice Webb on Tyler Perry’s “Sistas”, his TV/Film work includes roles on “Bolden”, “Get On Up”, “Christmas Belles”, and “A Question Of Faith”.

KEVIN A. WALTON: Whether it’s on screen, on stage, or in a personal conversation, Kevin A. Walton is quite known for leaving a lasting impression. There is a depth and authenticity to him that is both captivating, and intriguingly refreshing, which he displays across a wide range of talents and skill.

After a series of more dramatic roles, in the film “Playin’ For Love” Kevin revealed a more comedic side of himself in the character of Carvel ‘Cooty’ Larson which he delivered flawlessly alongside the guidance of Robert Townsend.

TRINITY WHITESIDE: Trinity was born in Asheville, North Carolina to an African American father and Caucasian mother. He is the father of three children (Nikolas, Skye, and Makaiya) from his wife of 18 years, Nikkia Whiteside.

Trinity began his acting career in 2013, gracing the screens of such hit shows as BET’s The Game, The Originals on CW, and feature films Barbershop 3, and The Fate of The Furious.

CRYSTAL HAYSLETT: Crystal is a native of Martin, TN. She attended the University of Tennessee at Martin & received a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications/Public Relations.

In 2013, she started working at Tyler Perry Studios in the costume department. By 2015, she was the studio’s Costume Designer and personal stylist to Tyler Perry, which ultimately lead to consultant producing and guest starring as Fatima in “Sistas.” When the show was renewed for a second season, Hayslett was bumped to series regular.

Things start to heat up Wednesday, as Aaron confides in Karen that he has a new plan for his life. Preston surprises Danni with dinner and roses. Sabrina thinks Gary may be telling the truth about his ex-wife setting him up.
