Exclusive: Three 6 Mafia Speaks to UrbanBridgez.com

Three 6 Mafia set out to be kings of their native Memphis, Tennessee. Now, nearly 20 years into their professional careers, DJ Paul and Juicy “J” have become one of music’s biggest success stories. They have a host of gold and platinum singles and albums, have produced for such platinum rappers as Ludacris and UGK, and have released albums under their own independent Hypnotize Minds imprint that have combined to sell several million units.

Perhaps most impressively, though, Three 6 Mafia is the only rap group to win an Oscar and perform at the prestigious award ceremony; they won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 2006 for “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” from the film Hustle & Flow at the 78th Annual Academy Awards.

With their latest sonic masterpiece, Laws Of Power, Three 6 Mafia adds another notch in their already impeccable resume. The high powered collection rolls out like an aural roller coaster that travels between the highs and lows of life. Of course, DJ Paul and Juicy “J” serve as tour guides imparting their signature insight, gruffness and humor.

In this exclusive interview with UrbanBridgez.com, as apart of our anniversary interview series! Three 6 Mafia talked to Aries about their upcoming release “Laws of Power,” staying relevant after so many years in the game, other upcoming projects and more!

UrbanBridgez.com: Laws of Power, tell me about the new album?
DJ Paul (Three 6 Mafia): Man it’s HAM, it’s gangsta! We got a few pop songs on there to satisfy the pop tastebuds. We also got something for our underground original fanbase. We got a song called “Shake My,” that features Kalenna & Pitbull. And we got a song called “Feel It” featuring Tiesto, Sean Kingston and Flo Rida. We also got an urban single out called “Little Freak,” with Webbie. We’re working both sides of the market.

UrbanBridgez.com: Who are some of the people you guys worked with this time?
DJ Paul (Three 6 Mafia): We got Tech N9ne on the album, we got a couple of tracks on there produced by Dr. Luke. We got a track on there produced by Rodney Jerkins and one with Kevin Rodolph. He’s actually singing on the song also and produced it. So we got some hot records!

UrbanBridgez.com: How did you guys select who you want to work with on this album?
DJ Paul (Three 6 Mafia): Sony came to us and had a couple people in mind. Dr. Luke’s name came up and he has a great track record. He’s like one of the #1 producers out right now. So we were like yeah, we’ll go into the studio with him. Rodney Jerkins had the track already done, he had like the beat and the hook already on it. So we took that track and Kevin Rodolph it was our idea and we went in the studio with him. So it was like a collabo, Sony came with some ideas and we had some ideas on who we wanted to work with. Everything worked out.

UrbanBridgez.com: “Feel it” is starting to take off, how did that song come about?
DJ Paul (Three 6 Mafia): Tiesto had the track, he wanted us to guest appear on it for his album. So we did and the track is hot so he was like y’all can use it for your album as well. So we was like cool, we put Sean Kingston on it, then Flo Rida jumped on it and bam the song is hotter! It sounds like one of those international records that can take you to Mars. It’s like ones of those records that will always be around, like in the clubs.

UrbanBridgez.com: When will the full video premiere?
Juicy J (Three 6 Mafia): In the middle of November the label is saying.

UrbanBridgez.com: 10 albums later, how have you guys managed to stay so relevant all these years?
DJ Paul (Three 6 Mafia): Man just keeping our ears to the streets, working with different producers and people. Just having love for the music man. We like doing music, we be in the studio everyday, so just the grind really. It’s not easy, I mean we been around for so long but still have managed to keep a hit rolling. Keep something on the radio, a movie, TV show, something.

UrbanBridgez.com: After winning the academy award for “It’s Hard Out Here For Pimp” & becoming the first Hip-Hop artists to ever perform on the Academy awards what would you guys say it is about that song that made it so worthy of all the accolades it received?

Juicy J (Three 6 Mafia): The Soul of the song.
DJ Paul (Three 6 Mafia): Yeah the soul of it and it went with the movie. When you hear the song, it’s like bam!
Juicy J (Three 6 Mafia): With makes a theme song for a movie so great is when you can close your eyes and listen to the music. And the song tells the movie. It’s like a commercial, you get the whole theme of the movie through the theme song. It just gets you, like damn I gotta see this movie man.
DJ Paul (Three 6 Mafia): Like the theme song to Rocky, you know somebody about to get they ass kicked when you hear it (laughs).
Juicy J (Three 6 Mafia): Yeah like it’s about to go down in this motherfucker (laughs)!

UrbanBridgez.com: Can fans expect to see you guys in anymore upcoming reality shows?
DJ Paul (Three 6 Mafia): Yeah we got a comedy cooking show called Cooking Ain’t Easy. We’re at the point of finishing negotiating the contract for that. That should be coming out in the middle of next year.

UrbanBridgez.com: What’s next for you guys after the release?
Juicy J (Three 6 Mafia): Shows, overseas shows, bars, independent releases, just working you know.
DJ Paul (Three 6 Mafia): We’re just going to be working on movies or whatever. We have alot of things we’ve always wanted to do. We’ve been so busy, so we just gotta keep grinding.

UrbanBridgez.com: Any last words for your fans?
